Once, early in a semester when he taught at Dartmouth College in the 1940s, Robert Frost came into the classroom to collect the first papers he'd assigned his students.
Frost asked whether any of the young men had written anything that they could stand by passionately. When no one raised a hand, America's future poet laureate threw all the papers into a wastebasket.
