New teacher standards to further boost quality

So Steve Maharey's list has announced the introduction of national standards for students graduating as teachers. "The standards set out clearly what student teachers need to achieve to qualify as teachers, and to apply for provisional registration. They will operate from January next year."

Whilst this is good news for all New Zealand's schools I still wonder when teaching standards are going to be introduced for tertiary education. Having a PhD means you are extremely knowledgeable in your field of expertise but it does not equip you to be excellent at teaching, (though I realise some people are).

It seems to me that more "standards" just mean more political rhetoric for what any college or university worth their salt have already been doing. In my opinion most institutions of higher learning who graduate teachers do great job of equipping future teachers no matter what politicians say need to be done.
