Interesting article in last weeks "New Zealand Education Review" which states that only a minority of children are highly motivated. 32 % have little faith in school, 38% are unsure of gains from school; 28% are highly motivated with aims for university/professional career plans.
As someone who has worked in education for many years I'm not sure whether to rejoice at the 28% who want to go onto university or cry for the other 70% who don't think much about school (and presumably will leave as soon as).
Most of the highly motivated are from high income families or tertiary qualified mothers. So it seems we continue to perpetuate the same. Those in the "haves" being more likely to succeed.
