RedNova News - Making All the Right Connections reports that "Curriculum design helps teachers see the bigger picture", obvious you may think but not many teachers have an overall view of the curriculum their students experience.
The article goes on the talk about the step needed turn teachers into curriculum designers. "Turning educators into curriculum designers takes time and the involvement of a school's educational community. Educators must examine their own curriculum in the context of curriculum requirements for the whole school in all subject areas."
Steps:
"STEP 1: Meet pre-conditions
STEP 2: Identify and clarify the curriculum
STEP 3: Share the curriculum
STEP 4: Address gaps, repetitions, and assessments
STEP 5: Construct a curriculum map
STEP 6: Organize the curriculum to identify logical connections
STEP 7: Use logical connections to create units
STEP 8: Design weekly plans
STEP 9: Identify appropriate materials and resources
STEP 10: Develop daily lessons and activities."
Whilst all of these steps may not sit well for most faculty in tertiary, there would be benefit from people being able to see beyond the paper they teach.
