This article by Melody M Thompson found that time on task for teaching online courses was "comparable to or somewhat less than that for face-to-face courses." Six faculty members took part in the study so the numbers are not large and it is difficult to draw conclusions, but given the swell of feeling amongst many that online teaching takes more time it is interesting to have an alternative view.
